Black and White Photo Engraving Vectors
The Black and White Photo preset represents tone through the distribution of dark vector geometry rather than multiple engraved-color layers.
How tone is represented
The source image is reduced to two tonal values that determine where dark engraving geometry is created. The spacing and distribution of dark geometry create the impression of intermediate tone at viewing distance.
Source-image tips
Images with a clear subject, controlled background, and useful contrast generally translate better than low-contrast or heavily compressed images.
Test before production
Run a small material test because feature size, heat accumulation, focus, and surface finish can all change the apparent darkness and tonal range.
Control reference
Ranges and defaults below come directly from the current filter implementation.
Minimum island area
Removes isolated color regions smaller than the selected raster-area threshold. Each footprint transfers to the touching swatch that shares the most pixel sides; Black is used only when no swatch touches it.
Analogy: Like removing a tiny mosaic tile and giving its space to the neighboring color wrapped around most of its edges.
Simplification
Reduces small boundary bends and vector points while retaining the larger silhouette.
Analogy: Like tracing a coastline with a broader pencil that skips the smallest coves.
Smoothing radius
Rounds small corners and calms jagged region boundaries.
Analogy: Like sanding a cut edge with progressively more rounding pressure.
Transparent light areas
Leaves the light half of the black-and-white result unengraved instead of exporting light geometry.
Analogy: Like printing black ink on clear film and treating the unprinted film as empty space.
