What Laser Should I Buy?

There is no universally best laser. The right purchase depends on the materials, marks, production volume, available space, software, safety requirements, support expectations, and amount of experimentation that suit you. For this application's broadest color-control potential, a well-specified MOPA fiber galvo is usually the strongest starting point, but the complete machine matters as much as the logo on its laser source.

My own reference point

I personally use a JPT-E2-M7 100 watt MOPA and am extremely satisfied with it. Its adjustable pulse behavior and available power give me a broad experimental range for color, texture, and diffraction work.

That is an owner's experience, not a universal prescription. A 100 watt open galvo may be more machine, cost, risk, or setup work than another user needs, while a lower-power enclosed system, a Q-switched source, or an industrial turnkey workstation may fit someone else's materials and business much better. Buy for your work rather than copying mine.

Choose the process before the brand

Start by listing the materials and outcomes that must earn money or justify the machine: metal color marking, deep engraving, dark annealed marks, coated-material removal, serial numbers, jewelry, tools, tumblers, flat artwork, cylindrical parts, or production traceability. A machine that excels at one of these may be an expensive compromise for another.

This application is centered on fiber-laser color and diffraction workflows, so a MOPA fiber galvo deserves special consideration. A Q-switched fiber galvo can be a capable and economical marker with a more limited parameter space. CO2 and diode systems address different material families and should not be purchased merely because they are called lasers.

Understand source versus complete machine

JPT and IPG manufacture laser sources and related industrial technology. The source is only one component inside a complete marker. The machine vendor or integrator also chooses the galvo head, controller, power supply, F-theta lens, Z axis, enclosure, extraction provisions, wiring, calibration, software, and support.

Ask for the exact source manufacturer and model in writing. Terms such as MOPA, fiber, 100 watt, or color laser are not enough to identify pulse-width range, supported frequency range, beam quality, control interface, or operating limits. Two machines advertised with similar headline specifications can behave very differently.

Pulse control and source type

For maximum palette exploration, verify that the MOPA pulse width is genuinely adjustable through the controller and software across a useful documented range. Also verify the valid combinations of pulse width, frequency, and power; controls are not necessarily independent across the entire range.

A Q-switched source normally offers fixed or much less adjustable pulse duration. It can still be excellent for general marking, engraving, and a tested compact palette, but expect fewer independent paths to a target surface response. If color discovery is central to the purchase, ask the vendor to demonstrate several repeatable colors on your actual material rather than showing a generic sample card.

Power is not a quality score

More watts can improve throughput, deep engraving, or the ability to work efficiently at higher speed, but power alone does not guarantee more colors, finer detail, or better control. A higher-power source can also make a delicate process window harder to navigate if the machine cannot deliver low and stable energy where needed.

Compare usable adjustment range, pulse behavior, beam quality, spot size, scanner performance, and the marks produced on your materials. Choose enough power for the slowest production task you expect, then confirm the system also performs the lightest and most detailed work you care about.

Lens and working field

An F-theta lens trades field size against spot size, energy density, edge performance, and working distance. A smaller field commonly favors a smaller spot and higher energy density; a larger field covers bigger work but may reduce fine-detail or process intensity. The exact tradeoff depends on the optical system.

Decide whether your normal work fits a 70 × 70, 110 × 110, 150 × 150, 200 × 200 mm, or larger field before buying. Ask whether additional lenses are supported, how lens correction files are supplied, how focus height changes, and whether swapping lenses preserves practical alignment. Record each production lens in its own Material Library metadata.

Compare available field sizes and specifications among Cloudray's F-theta lenses. Confirm wavelength, thread, correction data, and machine compatibility before ordering.

Controller, software, and LightBurn

Confirm compatibility using the exact controller revision and connection method, not a statement that a similar machine works. Ask whether LightBurn supports the device, whether all required galvo parameters are exposed, and whether correction files, configuration files, drivers, licenses, or hardware keys are included.

Integrated desktop and industrial systems may favor proprietary software. That can provide a polished workflow, camera alignment, autofocus, or production integration, but it may also limit direct use of .lbrn2 files or advanced MOPA controls. If Rasterizer is important to you, make the vendor demonstrate the complete handoff before purchase.

Mechanical features and accessories

Compare manual versus motorized Z adjustment, autofocus, focus repeatability, fixture mounting, pass-through capacity, rotary compatibility, chuck quality, foot control, red-light framing, camera alignment, and whether the galvo can reach the full advertised field without clipping the work or enclosure.

For curved or height-varying parts, decide whether a rotary is sufficient or whether dynamic-focus and true 3D marking are required. Accessories are most valuable when the vendor supports and calibrates them as a system rather than merely including them in a bundle.

Compare chuck, roller, and fixture styles in Cloudray's laser rotary attachments. Verify motor, connector, controller, diameter, weight, and clearance compatibility.

Safety, enclosure, and extraction

An open fiber galvo is generally a Class 4 laser installation requiring controlled access, wavelength-appropriate guarding and eye protection, trained operators, supervision, and a deliberate safety program. A properly engineered interlocked enclosure can be the better purchase for a shared shop, classroom, retail environment, or team with changing operators.

Budget for extraction appropriate to the marked material, fire precautions, safe fixturing, electrical requirements, and workspace layout. Ask what safety standard or classification applies to the delivered machine in your region; an enclosure-shaped cabinet is not automatically a certified Class 1 system.

Their appeal is breadth and attainable pricing, but buyers should verify the exact source, controller, enclosure, lens, included files, regional service, and LightBurn workflow for the individual listing.

That convenience can be compelling, but buyers needing unrestricted Material Library and MOPA parameter workflows should verify controller access and software compatibility on the exact model.

Match the machine to the buyer

An experimenter or technically confident small shop may favor an open galvo with a clearly specified JPT MOPA source, interchangeable lenses, and direct parameter access. A creator or retail operator may value an integrated enclosure, camera, autofocus, guided software, and simple accessories more than maximum openness.

A production shop should prioritize repeatable focus, robust fixtures, extraction, fast support, spare parts, and measured throughput. A regulated or automated manufacturer may need interlocks, validation documents, vision, database connectivity, traceability, service agreements, and a vendor capable of integrating the whole cell.

Require a purchase demonstration

Send vendors pieces from the exact material batch you intend to use and a written test request. Ask for representative fine detail, filled areas, the slowest deep process, the lightest mark, several colors if relevant, edge-of-field output, and a repeat of the same setting in multiple locations. Request the parameter record and unedited close photographs under identified lighting.

Rasterizer and the Fauxlographic Etching Lab prepare project artwork; they do not communicate with or drive a laser directly. If the laser and its controller are not compatible with LightBurn, Rasterizer-prepared artwork can be used with that machine only through SVG-only mode. LightBurn layer settings, Hatch Palette functionality, and LightBurn-specific Fauxlographic Etching Lab output cannot be applied through an SVG file.
